Everything worth remembering, in the order you’ll need it. Tick things off here, or print it and stick it on the fridge. ## Six to eight weeks out 0 of 4 - Get a moving quote and pencil in your date. The end of the month and summer fill up first. - Go through the garage, shed and basement. Anything you don’t want shouldn’t ride on the truck. - Renting? On a month-to-month tenancy in BC, a tenant gives one full month’s written notice, before the day rent is due. - Book time off work, and arrange a sitter for kids and pets on the day. ## Three to four weeks out 0 of 5 - Book the elevator at both buildings, and ask your strata about any move-in fee. - Set up mail forwarding with Canada Post. - Moving within Penticton? Your electric and water account is with the City of Penticton. Gas is FortisBC. - Tell your doctor, dentist, pharmacy, bank, insurance company and the school. - Measure the big furniture and the doorways at the new place. ## The last two weeks 0 of 5 - Start packing the things you use least. Leave the kitchen for last. - Label every box with its room. - Use up what’s in the freezer. - Confirm the date and time with us. - Sort out parking for a large truck at both ends. ## The day before 0 of 5 - Defrost and dry the freezer, and empty the fridge. - Pack an open-first box: kettle, mugs, toilet paper, bedding, phone chargers, the cat’s food. - Set aside passports, medication, jewellery and keys. These travel with you. - Take the bedding off the beds, and empty the dresser drawers. - Charge your phone. ## Moving day 0 of 4 - Walk through the house with the crew, and point out anything fragile or staying behind. - Check every cupboard, closet and the crawlspace before the truck leaves. - Read the meters, and take photos of the empty rooms. - At the new place, stand where you can point. We’ll put it where you want it. ## After you’ve moved 0 of 4 - Update your address with ICBC. They ask for this within 10 days of moving. - Update your BC Services Card and your Canada Revenue Agency account. - Leaving a rental? Do the move-out inspection with your landlord.
